I Ghosted My Disposable Vape: 10 Things I Noticed Quitting Single-Use Vapes

I never thought I would see the day where I say goodbye to my disposable vape, but that’s exactly what I did. Ghosting my disposable resulted in a series of surprising insights that I didn’t expect.

At first, it was the thought that worried me the most. The convenience of a disposable vape made everything so easy. What would I do without the bar I had bought on a routine basis for £5 daily? However, I quickly realised that there were reusable alternatives that not only benefitted me, but those around me too. Once I’d realised this, making the switch was a no brainer.

Choosing to ghost my disposable vape made me rethink my financial habits too. By not buying disposable vapes anymore, I noticed extra money in my pocket. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love the extra cash? So, let’s look into what I experienced during my switch, and why you might want to consider switching too.

Key Takeaways

  • Ghosting my vape changed my financial habits for the better.
  • The decision affected the psychology around my vaping habit positively.
  • The refillable, reusable alternatives were just as easy to use, and even more cost effective.

What Is Ghosting?

Ghosting, a term that became popular around 2014/2015 through celebrity gossip reporting. The term is used to describe the sudden end of a relationship from cutting communications, where you never hear from the other party again.

However, we like to think that this goes beyond relationships. Why can’t we end bad habits suddenly and not look back? Well, we think you can, so below are some of the affects you can expect to experience almost immediately after making the switch.

My Immediate Thoughts After Switching

For years, I’d been used to the convenience, flavour, and nicotine hit of disposables. This made the thought of switching to any other vaping option extremely daunting. Once I’d made the decision though, I quickly learned just how easy refillable vaping was. I purchased a pod kit, so all I had to worry about was keeping stocked up on e-liquids and pods, and keeping my kit charged. Below are the ten most impactful lessons I learnt when I made the switch, which will hopefully ease your worries as we move to a disposable free future.

For transparency, I went for an AEQ 2.0 and S-Elf Juice Fruits – Pineapple Ice 20mg to start. I was pleasantly surprised by the flavour, nicotine, and draw delivery of the pod kit. The shape and feel of the pod felt just like what I was used to with a disposable, and the 20mg strength meant I was feeling a similar nicotine hit.

  1. Cost Savings Over Time

I felt the financial impact of switching from disposable vapes to a refillable vape instantly. I’d heard that a single 10ml bottle equated to 5 x disposables worth of vaping. I couldn’t quite make sense of this until I switched myself, but my bank account was better off straight away.

Admittedly I probably vape a little bit more now that I always have a pod kit at hand. I can say however I have saved a substantial amount of money, and time, by not popping into my local shop for a £5 disposable every couple of days. The 10ml nic salt bottles really do deliver five times the amount of vaping, and I am saving hundreds of pounds as a result.

  2. Flavours, Flavours, Flavours

Over the years, I had landed on a few disposable flavours that I kept coming back to. I thought that finding e-liquids that gave me the same sweet satisfaction would take a while. However, with so many e-liquid options available these days, I was happily proven wrong.

Finding my favourite flavours in e-liquid form wasn’t a problem. In fact, I’ve been able to branch out and try even more flavours thanks to the sheer number of e-liquid flavours out there. And changing flavours on the go is a breeze with the pod system, allowing me to fully satisfy any flavour craving I might have at any time of the day.

  3. Nicotine Control and Flexibility

A major downside of disposables is their fixed nicotine strength. Most disposables are 20mg, which is the highest nicotine strength allowed in the UK. This means if you want to lower your nicotine intake, it can be extremely difficult if just using disposables. Although I initially used 20mg e-liquids when I first switched, I now use just 5mg throughout the day. With my pod kit, I even have the ability to go no nicotine if I want to.

  4. Ease of Use

Coils, pods, Mouth-to-Lung, Direct-to-Lung, nic salts, freebase, shortfills. When entering the world of refillable vapes, the sheer number of options can be overwhelming. Fortunately, there are plenty of resources available to help you get started.

After some research, I pulled the trigger on an AEQ 2.0 and S-Elf Juice Fruits – Pineapple Ice 20mg Nic Salt. When setting it up, I was taken aback by just how easy it was. All I had to do was pop some e-liquid in the pod, let it sit for a bit, pop the pod in, and draw. It really was that easy.

  5. Environmental Impact

Looking at the bigger picture, one of my real drivers for swapping out a disposable for a reusable vape kit is the negative impact disposable vapes have on the environment. It’s estimated that around 5 million single use vapes were littered or thrown away every week in 2023.

By swapping from disposables to a reusable kit, I’m able to limit how much waste I am contributing to the larger environmental issue. I can recycle my pods when I’m done with them, and I don’t have to worry about a lithium battery negatively impacting the environment.

  6. Customisation and Personalisation

Customisation doesn’t really exist in the disposable vape world, so it never really crossed my mind. Once I switched over to a reusable device, I realised that with the right kit, I could fine tune it to suit my exact needs. Now using an AEQ Pro+, I’ve been able to craft a vaping draw that suits exactly what I prefer.

  7. Psychological Impact

Now that I use refillable vape kits full time, I’ve had time to reflect on what has changed psychologically since switching. The biggest change I’ve seen is less worrying about my vape running out. Back in the day, if my disposable vape ran out, it meant I had no vape. These days, if my vape runs out of e-liquid or battery, I can simply top it up and keep vaping.

Another psychological change I’ve felt is more control over my vaping habit. I can choose the nicotine strength and how much e-liquid I use, giving me more control over how I choose to vape and whether I want to limit my nicotine intake.

  8. Reliability

There was no worse feeling than unpacking your recently purchased disposable, taking a draw, and realising it’s dead-on-arrival. Or those dreaded moments where you’re nowhere near the puff threshold yet, but your disposable still stops working.

While there are obviously faulty kits and pods out there, I’m fortunately yet to have an issue. Being able to rely on my vape kit year round, only topping up on e-liquid and pods, has been a bonus I didn’t see coming.

  9. E-liquid Quality

Disposables come pre-filled with e-liquid, taking away the ability to choose an e-liquid that you know is of the highest quality. When I switched to a refillable solution, I was able to make a conscious effort to only shop UK made, MHRA and TRPR approved e-liquids. This gave me a peace of mind that I didn’t have when using disposables.

  10. Convenience

Now this is probably where you’d think I’ll try and convince you pod kit vaping is somehow more convenient. It isn’t, and that was very apparent when I made the switch to a refillable solution. I just wanted to take the time to let you know that there isn’t a more convenient vaping solution than a disposable. However, if you are a conscious vaper, there is no better solution than making the switch today – and it really is worth it.

Adel's Story

Don’t just take my word for it. Adel, who works at VPZ, recently made the switch from disposables to a reusable. Take a look below at her story:

“I used to be a cigarette smoker for quite a few years, especially through university. Although I managed to kick the habit of smoking multiple a day, the craving to have an occasional cigarette every now and then remained. After a couple of years of occasional smoking, disposable vapes came around – the wide variety of sweet flavours, lack of unpleasant smell, and low price point instantly made them an appealing alternative to cigarettes. And so, I started purchasing an occasional disposable vape to satisfy the craving for a nicotine kick. However, it soon became evident to me that due to their short battery life, disposables run out very quickly, thus creating a lot of waste. This didn’t sit right with me, so I made the switch to a refillable, rechargeable device that is a much more sustainable (and cheaper!) choice. I now use an AEQ 2.0 and would never consider buying a disposable again. I can get any of my favourite flavours, such as Watermelon Ice or Lemon Lime, in vape liquid form to refill the vape once the liquid runs out.”

When using a disposable vape, certain issues can arise. I often find that these common queries help clarify the situation and guide me toward a resolution.

What could be the reason my new disposable vape isn't functioning?
There can be various reasons my new disposable vape isn’t working. It could be a dead battery, an empty cartridge, or a manufacturing defect. Sometimes, I might not have removed the safety cap, preventing any use.

How might one rectify a non-operational disposable vape pen?
To fix a non-operational vape pen, I first check if it’s charged. I ensure the battery is fully connected by checking the connections. If it’s still not working, I might try a different vape or contact customer support for help.

Can a disposable vape be compromised by physical impact?
Yes, physical impact can compromise a disposable vape. Dropping or hitting it can damage internal components. I should always handle it carefully to avoid such issues.

What are the implications of using a non-functioning disposable vape?
